Tragedy struck in the Idiroko area of Ogun State on Sunday as Prophet Yomi Adetula, 54, of the Celestial Church of Christ, Eagle Parish, was gruesomely murdered during a service.
The incident occurred at around 10:30 a.m. when three unidentified assailants stormed the church premises in Odo Eran.
Witnesses reported that the attackers, armed with a long double-barrel gun, shot Adetula in the chest, leaving him lifeless in a pool of blood.
They further brutalized the cleric by mangling his head with an axe before fleeing the scene.
Police spokesperson Omolola Odutola confirmed the killing, describing it as a calculated attack.
“Police officers raced to the scene and found Yomi Adetula, dressed in his white celestial garment, lying face-up in a pool of his blood,” she said.
“The victim’s body was riddled with bullets, and his head was severely damaged to ensure he was dead.”
Odutola stated that the culprits, after executing the crime, escaped towards the border area.
She added that the Idiroko Divisional Police Office has since deposited the body at the General Hospital morgue in Ilaro.
Odutola said, “Police officers raced to the scene and saw one Yomi Adetula, male, aged about 54yrs lifeless in the pool of his own blood which stained his white celestial garment, lying face up.
” On careful observation, his body was riddled with bullets and his head was not speared, to ensure the victim was really dead it was mangled with axe.
“On police inquiry, information further revealed that three men came into the church, brought out long double barrel gun, aimed at their target and fired a shot that brought the deceased down”.
She said an investigation has been launched, with efforts ongoing to apprehend the killers. The motive behind the attack remains unclear.
