A 20-year-old man, Obioma Joseph Nwadinma, met his untimely death while attempting to steal cables from a 500kva distribution transformer at Abayi-Ogbuligba Junction in Osisioma Local Government Area of Abia State.
The incident, which occurred over the weekend, was confirmed in a statement by Aba Power’s Communication Manager, Edise Ekong, on Monday.
Ekong disclosed that Nwadinma was electrocuted while trying to escape after his suspicious movements were spotted by community members, who promptly alerted the police and the Aba Power security team.
“It is regrettable that the young man, Obioma Joseph Nwadinma, in his 20s and an indigene from a nearby community, lost his life in an ignominious manner, thereby bringing shame to his family, community, and friends,” Ekong said.
Ekong praised the proactive actions of community leaders and residents in safeguarding critical infrastructure in the area, describing their efforts as a commendable step toward reducing vandalism.
He noted that such vigilance had helped prevent further incidents of destruction across Osisioma and Aba North LGAs.
He further revealed that another individual, Isaac Ude, was apprehended for tampering with prepaid electricity meters in Aba North LGA. The suspect was detained by the police in collaboration with Aba Power’s security team.
“These two related incidents, among others, show that communities, businesses, and individuals in our coverage area are fast developing the owner’s mindset.
They recognize that the electricity infrastructure in their places is their own asset, which must be protected for the benefit of all,” Ekong added.
Addressing the ongoing challenges in power supply, Ekong expressed optimism that electricity provision in Aba would improve soon, as gas supply to the company’s 188-megawatt General Electric plant is expected to resume.
This, he said, would ensure more consistent power delivery and further encourage public cooperation in protecting infrastructure.
“We are immensely grateful to the communities in our franchise area for their understanding and support, which we will never take for granted. We implore them to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity near power installations,” the statement concluded.
