Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals, in collaboration with Dangote Fertilisers Limited, has awarded scholarships to 473 students from 10 secondary schools and seven tertiary institutions as part of its ongoing commitment to education and community development.
PLATFORM TIMES reports that in addition to the scholarships, the company donated 804 tables and chairs to secondary schools in its host communities of Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos State.
A statement issued by Head, Media Relations, Branding and Communications, Sunday Esan and made available to PLATFORM TIMES on Monday read that the interventions were unveiled during the 5th edition of the Dangote Scholarship Award Programme held at Idotun Community Junior High School, Lekki, on Thursday, January 16, 2025.
According to the statement, the event witnessed an outpouring of joy from students, parents, teachers, and community leaders as scholarship certificates and educational materials, including textbooks and notebooks, were presented to the beneficiaries.
Speaking at the event, the Group Vice President of Oil & Gas at Dangote Industries Limited, Devakumar Edwin, described the initiative as a partnership with host communities to foster sustained growth through education, innovation, and opportunity.
“Education, as we all know, is the passport to the future. At Dangote, we believe that education is not just a privilege but a right that every child deserves.
“This belief has fueled our dedication to supporting students and schools in our host communities since the year 2019 when we launched the Scholarship Award Programme as a key pillar of our Community Development Plan,” Edwin said.
He praised the students for their academic diligence, noting the significant increase in beneficiaries from 56 in 2019 to 450 in 2024.
He emphasized that the company’s decision to provide 804 tables and chairs is part of its broader goal of enhancing the learning environment.
Olayinka Akande, Managing Director of Dangote Industries Free Zone Development Company, urged the scholarship recipients to maintain a standard of excellence, a core value of the Dangote Group.
Similarly, Ogunleye Mojisola, Head of Social Performance at Dangote Petroleum & Petrochemicals, highlighted that education is one of the four pillars of the company’s Community Development Plan, which was developed in collaboration with the community.
“The increase in the number of beneficiaries each year is a clear indication that the initiative is fulfilling its purpose, motivating students to study hard and achieve academic excellence,” Mojisola remarked.
The Aro of Lekki Kingdom, Chief Adewale Salami, who represented the Oni of Lekki, praised the company for shaping the future of the community through its educational interventions.
He reiterated the kingdom’s commitment to supporting Dangote Industries Limited.
Similarly, Alhaji Wasiu Ayeola, Chairman of the Lekki Coastal Area Development Association, commended the founder of Dangote Industries, Aliko Dangote, for transforming the area into a hub of opportunities.
He described education as a vital tool for community transformation.
Beneficiaries, including Atibere Peter from Lagos State University and Dauda Omolara from Community Senior High School, expressed gratitude, noting that the scholarships would ease their financial burdens and inspire them to achieve greater academic success.
