NJC Denies CJN Ordered Nnamdi Kanu’s Release, Return To Kenya

The National Judicial Council (NJC) has dismissed reports claiming that the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, ordered the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), and his repatriation to Kenya.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the NJC’s Deputy Director of Information, Kemi Ogedengbe, described the report as false and baseless, urging the public to disregard it.

“The attention of the National Judicial Council (NJC) has been drawn to media reports that the Hon. Chief Justice of Nigeria and Chairman of the Council, Hon. Justice Kudirat Motonmori Olatokunbo Kekere-Ekun, has ordered the release of the detained Nnamdi Kanu and his repatriation to Kenya,” the statement read.

“The council wishes to state that the media report is false and a figment of the imagination of the writer, as there are no court proceedings, decisions, or judgments where such statements ascribed to His Lordship were made.”

The NJC further clarified that Justice Kekere-Ekun had never presided over any case involving Kanu at the Supreme Court concerning jurisdiction issues and had not issued any formal letter to the Kenyan government or its high commission regarding his arrest or trial.

Kanu, who has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since his extradition from Kenya in 2021, is facing charges related to treasonable felony.

His case was recently reassigned to Justice James Omotosho following the recusal of Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court.

The NJC urged the public to disregard the false report, reiterating that the CJN had made no such pronouncements or interventions regarding Kanu’s legal proceedings.
