The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), has announced the graduation of 120 students with First Class Honours at its 32nd Convocation Ceremony, highlighting the institution’s commitment to academic excellence.
Speaking during a press conference to mark the event, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olusola Kehinde, revealed that a total of 3,567 students earned Bachelor’s Degrees across various disciplines.
Among them, 1,626 graduated in the Second Class Upper Division, 1,624 in the Second Class Lower Division, and 164 in the Third Class category.
Prof. Kehinde emphasized the university’s dedication to its core mandates of teaching, research, and community engagement.
He noted that the institution’s teaching staff had made significant strides in training both Nigerian and international students, aiming to produce graduates capable of contributing meaningfully to national development.
“As a university, we are committed to turning out graduates who will contribute towards the development of Nigeria,” he stated.
The Vice-Chancellor highlighted the introduction of seven new academic programmes within the past year, expanding the university’s offerings from three programmes to ten.
He explained that the programmes included ; department of Library and Information Science, Computer Science (with specializations in Cyber Security, Data Science, Software Engineering, and Information Systems)
Others are department of Pure and Applied Chemistry, department of Information Technology
Prof. Kehinde also noted that FUNAAB now houses an Institute of Communication and General Studies.
With 38 fully accredited programmes and 54 departments, the university continues to position itself as a leader in Nigeria’s higher education sector.
FUNAAB’s 10,200-hectare land is being leveraged for collaborations with public and private organizations to address food scarcity in Abeokuta and beyond.
Prof. Kehinde highlighted the university’s global recognition as the best University of Agriculture in Africa and its active participation in research initiatives.
The vice Chancellor said the institution has secured substantial grants, including six proposals approved by the National Research Institute.
It is also a key beneficiary of TETFund-sponsored programmes, which have bolstered its research capabilities.
Additionally, Prof. Kehinde revealed that some FUNAAB students won international research grants within the past year, further showcasing the university’s commitment to innovation and academic excellence.
According to him, in 2024, FUNAAB received ₦133.9 million from the National Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) to support 1,300 students.
He added that the university’s alumni association also contributed ₦8 million to assist less privileged students with tuition fees, reinforcing its commitment to inclusivity.
