The Northern leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has expressed its satisfaction with the inclusiveness of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, despite the contentious Muslim-Muslim ticket in the presidency.
Speaking after the association’s quarterly meeting on Saturday, Yakubu Pam, the Chairman of Northern CAN, stated that while the association had hoped for a more balanced ticket, it recognizes that there has been notable inclusiveness in Tinubu’s government.
“For me, the most important thing is a government that is inclusive,” Pam said. “While the Muslim-Muslim ticket is in place, we have also seen reasonable inclusiveness in the government.”
However, Pam made it clear that the association would still prefer a shared presidency, with Christians and Muslims represented in key positions.
He emphasized the importance of diversity in the country’s leadership, noting, “Left for us, we would say yes, let’s have Christians in certain positions, like the Vice President, to reflect our nation’s diversity.”
On the issue of national security, Pam stressed that addressing the insecurity plaguing the country remains a top priority.
“People desire to see that insecurity is addressed so they can go about their normal daily activities without fear,” he said, acknowledging that while improvements have been noted, much work remains to be done.
The CAN leader called for the government to declare a state of emergency on the issue of insecurity, citing the continued violence and instability that affects many Nigerians.
Despite acknowledging that having a Christian in the Vice President’s position might not fully resolve the issue, Pam reiterated the association’s prayers for an end to the killings.
“We may have a Christian there, and killings may still be going on, but it is something we still pray for,” he said.
Pam concluded by reaffirming the association’s preference for a Christian Vice President, suggesting that such a move would be an important step in reflecting Nigeria’s diverse demographic makeup.
He noted, “The presidency will be good to bring a Christian as number 2. We would appreciate it, and there’s nothing wrong with that. Whatever way, the important thing is that insecurity should be tackled.”
