Atiku: No Regrets Choosing Okowa Over Wike For 2023 Election

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has expressed satisfaction with his decision to select Ifeanyi Okowa as his running mate for the 2023 presidential election, despite speculations favouring Nyesom Wike.

Atiku, who spoke during an interview on Untold Stories with Adesuwa, reiterated that his choice aligned with the recommendations of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leadership.

In June 2022, Atiku announced Okowa, the former governor of Delta state, as his vice-presidential candidate following his victory in the PDP primary.

This decision sparked mixed reactions, especially from supporters of Wike, who emerged second in the primaries. Wike, known for his influential role in Rivers state politics, later supported Bola Tinubu, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, during the election.

“Atiku emphasized that the PDP leadership proposed three candidates for the position, ranking Okowa as their top choice.

He defended his decision, stating, ‘I picked number one, who was Okowa, and followed the party’s recommendations,'” the report reads.

The former vice-president highlighted his approach in the 2023 elections, contrasting it with criticisms he faced in 2019 over the choice of his running mate.

He noted the importance of party consultation and committee recommendations in his decision-making process.
