The Ogun State High Court has reversed the controversial installation of Alexander Macgregor as the Olu of Orile Ilawo, declaring the entire process illegal and ordering Macgregor to cease all activities as monarch pending further judicial proceedings.
Justice Olatokunbo Majekodunmi, delivering the verdict on Tuesday, criticized the government’s hasty action in proceeding with Macgregor’s installation despite ongoing legal challenges.
The court upheld the suit filed by the Ogunsanya-Ariku Royal Family of Ilawo, which contested the legitimacy of Macgregor’s claim to the throne following the death of the former king in December 2021.
The judge issued a mandatory injunction restraining Macgregor from parading himself as the Olu of Ilawo and directed the withdrawal of all symbols of authority bestowed upon him by the government.
Justice Majekodunmi emphasized the importance of upholding the integrity of court processes, stating that actions undermining judicial authority cannot be tolerated.
Reacting to the ruling, spokespersons for the Ogunsanya-Ariku family expressed satisfaction with the court’s decision, applauding the judiciary for upholding justice and the rule of law.
Dr. David Ogunsanya, Secretary to the Aiku and Ogunsanya dynasty, emphasized the family’s commitment to peaceful resolution through legal means,avoiding potential communal conflicts.
They affirmed their confidence in the judicial process and urged the public to disregard any misinformation regarding the status of the throne.L
