In a concerted effort to combat Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs), experts in Ogun State have stressed the critical role of health education and behavioural changes in preventing these debilitating conditions.
This call to action was emphasized during a media engagement programme held in Abeokuta, ahead of World NTD Day on January 30th, 2025.
Highlighting the significance of the event, Dr. Festus Soyinka, Director of Public Health for Ogun State, stressed the urgent need to raise awareness about the devastating impact of NTDs.
He pointed out that diseases such as Elephantiasis, enlarged scrotum, blood in urine, and leprosy are prevalent in areas with poor sanitation and are closely linked to poverty.
“NTDs are preventable and treatable,” Dr. Soyinka affirmed, urging communities to participate in the free annual Mass Administration of Medicine program aimed at controlling these diseases.
He also called on Nigerians, especially those in rural areas, to adopt healthier behaviors, including the cessation of open defecation and avoiding contact with contaminated water sources.
Mrs. Maryam Kafil-Emiola, Deputy State Coordinator for Neglected Tropical Diseases, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the importance of creating a clean environment to mitigate the spread of infections.
She highlighted common symptoms such as loss of appetite, fatigue, and painful urination, which serve as early indicators of NTDs.
The theme for this year’s World NTD Day, “United Act, and Eliminate,” underscores the collective responsibility required to eradicate these diseases.
Mrs. Kafil-Emiola called for collaborative efforts among government agencies, communities, and stakeholders to achieve significant progress in combating NTDs.
The event concluded with a renewed commitment from health officials and stakeholders to intensify efforts in health education and community engagement, aiming to create a healthier and disease-free environment across Ogun State.
