The Labour Party (LP) has called on the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to step aside from contesting the 2027 presidential election, claiming that the opposition party has lost its direction and focus.
The LP argues that the PDP, once Nigeria’s largest political party, is grappling with an unresolved leadership crisis that undermines its capacity to provide effective governance in the future.
In a statement issued on Friday by LP’s National Publicity Secretary, Dr. Abayomi Arabambi, the party highlighted the internal discord within the PDP, citing the ongoing dispute over the position of national secretary and the allegations made by 2023 presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, that party members were being bribed by the ruling government to destabilize democracy.
Arabambi stated that these issues reflected the PDP’s deepening dysfunction and diminished ability to lead Nigeria.
“The PDP has not been able to resolve its internal conflicts since losing power to the APC in 2015. With such disarray, it is unlikely they can unite and mount a serious challenge in 2027,” Arabambi said, adding that the party’s chances of reclaiming the presidency were slim if it failed to address its internal problems.
The LP’s comments follow a meeting held on January 31st by the PDP Governors’ Forum in Asaba, Delta State, where eight state governors met to discuss unity within the party ahead of an upcoming National Executive Council (NEC) meeting.
Governors from states like Akwa Ibom, Bauchi, Bayelsa, and Zamfara attended, with Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State sending his deputy in his stead.
Arabambi, however, dismissed these efforts, describing them as insufficient given the scale of the PDP’s challenges
He recommended that the PDP should forgo fielding a candidate for the 2027 elections and instead support the LP, particularly its 2023 presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, in a united front to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
