Tragedy struck in Kwara state when a 200-Level Mass Communications student of the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) (name withheld) reportedly committed suicide.
PLATFORM TIMES gathered that he reportedly killed himself over his inability to meet his financial needs.
Some sources said that the deceased, who was in good standing academically,reportedly drank a poisonous substance last weekend just after his roommate had left their hostel of residence at Oke-odo axis of Tanke area, Ilorin, Kwara State, for lectures at the university’s campus.
The deceased was said to be a potential first-class student at the Department of Mass Communication before he decided to end his own life.
The sources added that the deceased left a note for his roommate, stating his inability to cope with his financial situation as the reason for committing suicide.
A senior management staff of the university, who pleaded anonymity confirmed the incident.
The management staff described the incident as shocking, saying that the development had thrown the university and students into a mourning mood.
Sources in the university community also said that the deceased committed suicide due to financial challenges facing him as he lost his father few years ago, while his mother, a retired school teacher, had taken over financial responsibility for his academic pursuit since the death of the family’s breadwinner.
