An Akwa Ibom State High Court in Uyo has handed down a significant judgment in a case involving electoral fraud during the 2019 general elections.
Professor Ignatius Uduk, a distinguished academic in Human Kinetics at the University of Uyo (UNIUYO), has been sentenced to three years imprisonment following his conviction on two counts of electoral malpractice.
The verdict was delivered by Justice Bassey Nkanang of Uyo High Court 5 on Wednesday.
The court found Prof Uduk guilty on two of the three charges brought against him by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Notably, Uduk was acquitted of the first count but convicted on the subsequent two counts. He has been sentenced to three years imprisonment for each of the counts, with the terms to be served concurrently.
This case underscores the serious consequences of electoral misconduct in Nigeria, particularly among academic and intellectual circles.
It marks another prominent conviction stemming from the aftermath of the 2019 general elections, which saw heightened scrutiny and legal actions against individuals accused of undermining the electoral process.
Earlier in the ongoing trial that commenced in 2019, another professor from the University of Uyo, Peter Ogban, faced similar charges and was also sentenced to three years imprisonment for electoral fraud during the same electoral period.
The sentencing of Prof Uduk serves as a reminder of the judiciary’s commitment to upholding the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral system and ensuring accountability among those entrusted with academic and public responsibilities.
