… 13 Fake IJMB Cases Under Probe
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has uncovered at least 585 forged Advanced Level (A/Level) certificates so far in 2025, raising alarm over the increasing sophistication of admission fraud and warning tertiary institutions against bypassing the Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS).
The Registrar of the Board, Professor Is-haq Oloyede, disclosed this during a virtual meeting with JAMB staff held in preparation for the 2025 Mock Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and the main UTME.
Oloyede, who condemned the alarming rate of certificate falsification, said the discovery of the 585 fake credentials was made possible through the Nigeria Integrated Post-secondary Education Data System (NIPED), which was introduced to tackle such fraudulent practices.
“The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has uncovered at least 585 A/Level forged certificates in 2025 alone,” the Registrar said.
“It was to curb this menace that the Nigeria Integrated Post-Secondary Education Data System (NIPED) was established.”
He noted that a particularly worrisome aspect of the development was the detection of 13 forged Interim Joint Matriculation Board (IJMB) certificates—an A/Level qualification that enables candidates to secure Direct Entry admission into 200-level in Nigerian universities without sitting for the UTME.
According to him, the fraudulent certificates were uploaded by Professional Registration Centres and are currently under police investigation.
“Out of the 13 cases being investigated by the police, four culprits have been apprehended and are currently assisting the police and relevant authorities towards apprehending the ringleaders of these examination cartels,” Oloyede revealed.
He added that preliminary findings showed that some insiders within institutions were complicit in the illegal activities.
“Investigation revealed that there were internal collaborators in the institutions aiding and abetting this gross misconduct,” he said.
The Registrar also decried reports of extortion of candidates in some Computer-Based Test centres, where students were allegedly made to pay for services that are officially free.
“There were reports from some CBT centres on extortion of candidates for services expected to be free,” he said, describing the revelations as “mind-boggling” and a threat to the credibility of the nation’s admissions process.
Oloyede urged JAMB staff to remain vigilant and uphold the integrity of the examination and admission system, warning against any act that could compromise the Board’s reputation.
The 2025 findings come on the heels of similar discoveries made in 2024, during which the Board said it detected 1,665 counterfeit A/Level results during the Direct Entry registration exercise.
Of these, 453 originated from university diplomas, 397 from Colleges of Education, while the remaining came from other A/Level certification sources.
At Bayero University, Kano, for instance, only six out of 148 certificates submitted for Direct Entry admission were found to be authentic, prompting JAMB to increase scrutiny of submitted credentials and partner with institutions for thorough verification.
JAMB has since warned tertiary institutions to desist from admitting candidates with fake results, especially those admitted outside the official Central Admissions Processing System.
“Any institution found admitting students outside CAPS may be treated as complicit in result falsification,” the Board stated.
