Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has rewarded three outstanding students from Ogun State Polytechnic of Health and Allied Sciences (OSPOHAS), Ilese-Ijebu, with a generous cash gift in recognition of their academic excellence at the institution’s 3rd convocation ceremony.
PLATFORM TIMES reports that the reward is part of the state’s effort to encourage academic achievement and improve the educational environment for future generations.
Governor Abiodun, represented by his Special Adviser on Secondary Education, Mrs. Ronke Soyombo, announced a N2.5 million reward each to the top graduates of the 2021/2022, 2022/2023, and 2023/2024 academic sessions.
This gesture, according to the Governor, is a part of his administration’s drive to create a conducive environment for intellectual growth and excellence.
The top-performing students recognized at the ceremony were Ameenah Famuyewa from the Department of Dental Technology, who emerged the overall best graduate of the 2021/2022 academic session with a remarkable CGPA of 3.75. Victoria Rasak, from the Department of Health Information, also achieved an outstanding CGPA of 3.68 to clinch the top spot in the 2022/2023 academic session.
Meanwhile, Awawu Salami from the Department of Environmental Health Technology emerged the overall best graduate of the 2023/2024 academic session with an impressive CGPA of 3.94.
The Governor, in his address, praised the management of the institution for its continued development, despite its relatively recent establishment.
Abiodun expressed the state government’s commitment to investing further in the education sector, ensuring that students and institutions have the necessary resources to excel.
“Education is the bedrock of any society, and we will continue to ensure that our students have access to quality education.
The rewarding of these outstanding students today is a reflection of our commitment to nurturing the leaders of tomorrow,” Abiodun stated.
In his address, Dr. Rasaki Akinbo, the Rector of the institution, highlighted the remarkable strides made since the institution’s rebranding.
He said the Ogun State Polytechnic of Health and Allied Sciences (OSPOHAS) was officially declared and rebranded in February 2023, following the passage of the law establishing it on May 6, 2023.
According to him,as Nigeria’s first Polytechnic of Health, the institution is poised to be a leading force in the country’s health and allied sciences education.
Dr. Akinbo expressed profound gratitude to Governor Abiodun for his visionary leadership and support in the development of the institution.
“I am honoured to serve as the pioneer Rector of OSPOHAS. Under your leadership, Governor Abiodun, this institution has witnessed transformative growth, with numerous programmes accredited and re-accredited, new courses introduced, and significant infrastructural developments,” he said.
Among the institution’s notable achievements, Dr. Akinbo mentioned the completion of key buildings such as the Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) and Health Information Management (HIM) buildings, the renovation of hostels, and the ongoing upgrade of the institution’s ICT center.
He added that the institution’s Master Plan, which outlines the future trajectory for its development, was also successfully designed and is now in the implementation phase.
The Chairman of the Governing Council of the Polytechnic, Asiwaju Kunle Kakejaiye, in his remarks, made a passionate appeal for further state government intervention in the institution’s infrastructural needs.
