A political group under the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Itesiwaju Mainland (IM), has begun mobilising its members in Lagos Mainland Local Government and Yaba Local Council Development Area (LCDA) ahead of the upcoming local government election.
At its first monthly meeting of the year, held at Herbert Macaulay Primary School in Adekunle, Yaba, on Thursday, the group urged its members to ensure their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) are ready for the polls.
The Chairman of Itesiwaju Mainland, Prince Aliu Momoh, cautioned members against being deceived by groups falsely claiming to represent the APC.
“We normally have our meetings once a month to coordinate and prepare for the ward meetings. This is where we pass authentic information to members, who then take it to the grassroots,” Momoh stated.
He warned members to be wary of organisations masquerading as APC factions, claiming that some groups use the party’s name for personal gain.
“We advised our members to attend only official APC meetings at the local government level. Some faceless groups claim they are hosting APC meetings, but they are doing it for selfish reasons.
“We told our members not to fall for their tricks because, as of now, the party has no officially recognised executive,” he added.
The chairman assured that once APC at the state level provides official guidelines for the election, members will be duly informed.
On the timeline of the poll, Momoh hinted that the election might take place in May.
“We are hearing that the local government election may be conducted in May, but nothing is confirmed yet,” he noted.
Speaking on the group’s mission, the Secretary of Itesiwaju Mainland, Mr. Atanda Kola, said the initiative was created to ensure members receive the dividends of democracy and have a voice in party politics.
“From our findings, most of the time, people only see our candidates during elections. To address this, we set up this organisation to engage and integrate those who were not previously part of any political group.
“Our membership has expanded across both Lagos Mainland Local Government and Yaba LCDA. Over the past few months, we have held caucus meetings in various wards, and our strength has grown to over 1,500 members,” Kola stated.
