Former Chief Press Secretary to Ogun State Governor,Dare Folarin, has urged Public Relations professionals to harness the power of radio in addressing the country’s most pressing societal challenges.
Speaking at a monthly business meeting organized by the Ogun State Chapter of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), Folarin emphasized the critical role radio can play in mass mobilization, education, and re-orientation to ensure national progress.
Folarin, a seasoned broadcaster and Chief Executive Officer of Aeronics PR, made the remarks during a special session marking the 2025 World Radio Day.
PLATFORM TIMES reports that this year’s World Radio Day, set for February 13, will focus on “Radio and Climate Change,” highlighting the ever-growing relevance of radio in shaping public perceptions and behaviors.
According to Folarin, radio is a powerful tool to deliver public relations messages at low cost.
He acknowledged the medium’s potential to address widespread societal issues.
He argued that radio’s influence extends beyond its entertainment value, offering an unparalleled opportunity for value re-orientation.
Through creative content such as jingles, dramas, and music, radio can instill core societal values like honesty, integrity, hard work, and righteousness.
Folarin stressed that the impact of radio goes far beyond the educated urban elite, noting its ability to reach both literate and illiterate populations alike.
He highlighted how indigenous radio programs serve as a direct line to diverse communities, enabling public relations experts to re-shape public behavior in meaningful ways.
“Radio has been instrumental in conveying messages of love, tolerance, and the importance of education,” Folarin explained.
“Through local languages and relatable content, it can fight social ills like criminality, ritual killings, and other destructive behaviors.”
Echoing the sentiment, the Ogun NIPR Chairman, Mrs. Oluwaseun Boye, reiterated the importance of public relations professionals actively contributing to societal change.
She noted the need for individuals to lead by example, encouraging PR experts to uphold the same principles they promote in their campaigns.
Boye also inaugurated new committees within the Ogun NIPR, ensuring that the Chapter’s 2025 initiatives remain impactful.
The meeting saw the presentation of gifts and certificates to outstanding members, as well as the launch of the Ogun NIPR sticker, symbolizing the Chapter’s continued commitment to professional excellence.
In her speech, Boye called on members to commit to higher standards by upgrading their professional credentials, attending meetings regularly, and participating in Chapter activities.
