Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has reiterated that his support for President Bola Tinubu during the 2023 election was not motivated by any personal gain.
Speaking on Monday, El-Rufai emphasized that his backing for Tinubu’s candidacy was driven purely by a sense of duty to the country, party, and God, and that he never sought any form of reward in return.
El-Rufai, a key member of the Northern Governors’ Forum and a prominent figure in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), had earlier insisted that a Southerner should succeed President Muhammadu Buhari, ahead of the APC’s presidential primary.
Following this, Tinubu emerged as the party’s candidate and eventually triumphed over the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate Atiku Abubakar and the Labour Party’s Peter Obi in the general election.
However, El-Rufai, who was once a staunch ally of Tinubu, has recently been critical of the administration.
This has led to a growing rift between him and some members of the President’s inner circle, with frequent exchanges of words on social media.
A tweet by a user identified as @realYusufTukur on Sunday claimed that Tinubu and his allies had once desperately sought El-Rufai’s support before the election, showering him with praise.
However, according to Tukur, they later accused the former governor of not fully supporting the President after his victory.
Responding to the tweet, El-Rufai refuted these claims, asserting that his political support was never for personal benefit. “We did what we did for God, country, and party, expecting nothing in return,” El-Rufai wrote in his reply.
He described the unfolding situation as “merely another life experience and part of human nature” and suggested that while he had moved on from the matter, the conscience of those involved might still trouble them
