The Ogun State Government has earmarked a staggering N12.3 billion for waste management operations through the Ogun State Waste Management Authority (OGWAMA) over a five-year period, PLATFORM TIMES can exclusively report.
An analysis of the state’s budget documents from 2021 to 2025 reveals that a total of N12,320,553,919.96 has been allocated to OGWAMA to tackle the growing waste management challenges across urban and rural areas in the state.
PLATFORM TIMES reports that the yearly breakdown shows a fluctuating but ultimately upward trend in the agency’s funding. In 2021, OGWAMA received N1.46 billion, which slightly dipped to N1.19 billion in 2022.
The figure rose to N1.32 billion in 2023 and marginally increased to N1.33 billion in 2024.
However, 2025 marks a dramatic leap, with the state government allocating N7.01 billion—the highest in five years and over five times the 2024 figure.
The sharp rise in the 2025 allocation signals what appears to be a renewed government focus on environmental sanitation and sustainable waste disposal systems.
This comes amid growing concerns over indiscriminate dumping of refuse, clogged drainage systems, and health risks linked to poor waste management in parts of the state.
Despite consistent funding over the years, critics argue that OGWAMA’s performance has yet to reflect the scale of investment.
With the 2025 budget now setting a new record, residents and environmental advocates alike will be watching closely to see if the agency can finally deliver on its mandate.
As the new fiscal year unfolds, expectations are high for OGWAMA to justify the unprecedented funding and bring lasting improvements to Ogun’s environmental hygiene landscape.
