A group of former state chairmen under the defunct Congress for Progressives’ Change (CPC), one of the legacy parties that merged to form the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), has expressed deep concerns over what it described as the marginalisation of CPC elements within the APC-led government.
The forum, in a public statement issued in Abuja, lamented the internal divisions plaguing the CPC bloc and warned that the proliferation of voices claiming to speak for the bloc only underscores a lack of coherent leadership and inclusiveness within the party.
“We, members of the Forum of State Chairmen of the defunct Congress for Progressives’ Change (CPC), have observed with discomfort the way the CPC bloc in the ruling All Progressives’ Congress (APC) has become a subject of political controversy in recent times,” the statement read.
The former chairmen stated that their contributions to the formation and electoral victories of the APC have not been fairly rewarded either through government appointments or inclusion in party structures at both national and subnational levels.
They, however, distanced themselves from recent defections by some former CPC members, describing such actions as a personal democratic choice.
According to the forum, the majority of its members remain loyal to the APC and former President Muhammadu Buhari.
“While we do not begrudge those who have decided to quit APC, we wish to state without any ambiguity that, except for a few of us, we are unanimous in our decision to remain in the party with our principal, former President Muhammadu Buhari,” the forum noted.
They also pledged to support the current administration led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and urged the party leadership to embrace inclusivity and give all stakeholders a sense of belonging.
In a direct appeal to the President, the forum called attention to growing national insecurity and worsening economic conditions, warning that these pose existential threats to citizens.
“It is, therefore, important that the President, APC governments at all levels and the leadership of the party give these challenges the desired attention. These issues of governance, rather than the 2027 elections, should constitute our priority,” the statement concluded.
The forum urged unity within the party and prayed for divine guidance for the nation’s leaders.
