A Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos, has sentenced two individuals to six months’ imprisonment each for abusing the Nigerian currency by spraying N200 notes during a social event.
Justice Alexander Owoeye convicted the duo—Babatunde Peter Olaitan, popularly known as TDollar, and Tobilola Olamide, also known as TobiNation—after they pleaded guilty to separate one-count charges brought against them by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The EFCC told the court that the offence was committed on April 8, 2025, at a party held at 23 Macdonald Road, Ikoyi, Lagos. Both defendants were captured in a viral TikTok video spraying naira notes while dancing at the event.
The anti-graft agency said the action contravenes Section 21(1) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, 2007, which prohibits tampering with and mutilating the naira.
An investigative officer with the EFCC, Ibrahim Bukar, testified that the Commission initiated a probe on April 10 following public outrage over the viral footage.
He revealed that Olaitan admitted receiving a bundle of N200 notes from a fan, which he later sprayed on party guests.
Prosecutors C.C. Okezie and H.U. KofarNaisa presented evidence, including the viral video and written statements from the defendants, which were admitted by the court.
Upon reviewing the facts, Justice Owoeye found the defendants guilty and sentenced each to six months in prison, with an option of a N200,000 fine.
The EFCC reiterated its commitment to upholding the integrity of the naira, warning the public against currency abuse in any form.
