The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has uncovered a phony medical outreach allegedly operated by self-acclaimed missionaries who were administering unregistered drugs to unsuspecting residents in Abuloma, a community in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
According to a statement issued by the agency on Tuesday, the illegal operation was taking place at the Community Town Hall under the guise of a free medical evangelism programme.
NAFDAC said its enforcement team discovered various unregistered products, including items labelled as Evangelist Jenkins Supernatural Water and Evangelist Jenkins Eye Drops.
The agency further disclosed that the fake health workers claimed the products could cure critical ailments such as cancer, glaucoma, fibroids and arthritis.
Some victims who used the substances reportedly experienced adverse reactions, including swollen eyes, which the operators falsely described as signs of healing.
During the raid, a woman identified as Mrs Gladies Theophilus was apprehended, while the main suspect fled the scene and remains at large. NAFDAC operatives confiscated the counterfeit drugs and evacuated them to the agency’s zonal office for further analysis.
A full investigation has been launched, NAFDAC said, warning the public to be wary of dubious health interventions disguised as religious or charitable missions.
“We urge Nigerians to remain vigilant and report any suspicious healthcare activities to the nearest NAFDAC office,” the agency stated.
The development adds to growing concerns over the activities of unregulated medical outreaches across the country, especially those exploiting vulnerable populations under religious pretences.
