The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has announced a cash reward of N5 million for any information leading to the recapture of seven inmates who escaped from the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Ilesa, Osun State.
The jailbreak, which occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, May 20, was triggered by a heavy downpour that compromised the perimeter fence of the facility, allowing the inmates to flee.
The NCoS described the incident as a “force majeure” caused by the severe weather.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the Service’s Public Relations Officer, Deputy Controller of Corrections Umar Abubakar, urged members of the public to assist security agencies with useful information that could lead to the re-arrest of the fugitives.
“To encourage public participation, the Nigerian Correctional Service wishes to inform the general public that a cash reward of N5 million is being offered to anyone who provides useful information that leads to the recapture of the fleeing inmates,” the statement read.
Abubakar assured that all information provided would be treated with strict confidentiality and anonymity.
He advised the public to report any suspicious activity or sightings of the escapees to the nearest security agency.
The Service has not disclosed the identities of the fleeing inmates or the crimes for which they were serving sentences.
