The Lagos State Government has revealed that properties valued at N19.52bn were destroyed in fire incidents across the state in 2024.
The Commissioner for Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Relations, Mr. Olugbenga Oyerinde, disclosed this on Wednesday during a ministerial briefing marking the second year of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s second term.
According to Oyerinde, while 450 individuals were rescued from various fire emergencies, 91 persons were confirmed dead. However, properties worth N117.12bn were successfully salvaged during firefighting efforts.
Highlighting improvements in emergency coordination and security, the commissioner announced the recruitment of 100 security personnel to boost border security and the integration of the Nigerian Forest Security Service into the state’s security architecture.
He also said allowances for security officers had been doubled to improve welfare.
Oyerinde said the government distributed 320 units of security tools, including batons, torchlights, bulletproof vests, gloves, and raincoats.
Additionally, two new fire stations were commissioned in Ijegun-Egba and Ijede, with ongoing construction in Kosofe, Yaba, and Ikotun.
To enhance firefighting capacity, industrial boreholes were installed at fire stations in Alausa, Isolo, Ebute-Elefun, Ajegunle, and Ogombo.
Between January 2024 and March 2025, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) responded to 2,022 emergencies. Its Pre-Hospital Care Unit attended to 707 medical cases and treated 4,847 accident victims, he added.
