Two individuals have been hospitalised following the crash-landing of a training aircraft at the Ilorin International Airport, Kwara State.
The incident occurred around 4:00 p.m. on Saturday during a simulated instrument approach on Runway 05.
The aircraft, a Diamond training plane operated by an aviation training school in Ilorin, reportedly veered off the runway and came to a halt on a nearby grass verge.
Confirming the incident, the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) said the two occupants aboard the aircraft sustained serious injuries and were promptly evacuated to a medical facility, with assistance from the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency.
According to a statement by the NSIB’s Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance, Mrs Bimbo Oladeji, the bureau has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
“A Go-Team is being deployed from Abuja to Ilorin to conduct a thorough on-site investigation. The team will secure the crash site, gather physical evidence, interview witnesses and retrieve flight data to determine the root cause of the accident,” the statement read.
The Director General of the NSIB, Captain Alex Badeh, in the same statement, expressed concern for the victims and praised the swift response of emergency services.
“Our thoughts are with the injured, and we commend the immediate medical and rescue efforts.
“We are focused on establishing the exact cause of the accident to prevent future occurrences. Every investigation is a chance to improve safety,” he said.
The NSIB urged the public to refrain from speculation and allow the investigation to run its course. Updates, it said, will be shared as findings emerge.
At the time of filing this report, the condition of the injured individuals remains unknown.
