The Kaduna State Police Command has arrested a woman, Zaliha Shuaibu, for allegedly killing her co-wife’s three-month-old son with acid in Malari village, Soba Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
The tragic incident occurred when the baby’s mother, Maryam Ibrahim, briefly stepped out to use the restroom, leaving her infant behind.
Upon her return, she reportedly found her co-wife, Zaliha, holding the baby, who was foaming at the mouth and had visible injuries on his neck.
The child was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital where he was confirmed dead by medical personnel.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Mansir Hassan, confirmed the arrest, stating that preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect administered a harmful substance, suspected to be acid, to the child.
During interrogation, Zaliha allegedly confessed to the crime and named her husband’s younger brother, Lawal Muhammad, as an accomplice. According to her statement, Lawal provided the acid used in the attack.
Commissioner of Police in Kaduna State, CP Rabiu Muhammad, condemned the act, describing it as “gruesome and heartbreaking.”
He assured the public that justice would be served and all those involved would be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
“This is a deeply disturbing case,” the Commissioner said.
“The command will ensure thorough investigation and diligent prosecution. The law will take its full course.”
The police have since launched a manhunt for the alleged accomplice, who remains at large.
The incident has sparked outrage in the local community, with residents calling for swift and decisive action from the authorities.
The late infant has been buried according to Islamic rites.
