After over a year and multiple postponements, the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is under way in Abuja.
The meeting is taking place at the Legacy House, the dedicated presidential campaign office of the PDP located in Maitama Area of Abuja.
The last NEC meeting of the party was held on April 18, 2024 and since then efforts to convene another NEC had hit a brick wall, occassioned by either the leadership of the party or other stakeholders.
The Acting National Chairman Ambassador Umar Damagum, told the meeting that the NEC would discuss contending issues bedeviling the party.
Damagum said only three agenda were before the NEC, adding that efforts were underway to have another NEC soon to resolve the issues in the party.
He said the beauty of PDP is that it has internal mechanisms to tackle its challenges, noting that “People outside are waiting to see whether the party can solve its problem engineered from some quarters,” but they are equal to the task.
On his part, former Senate President and Chairman of the PDP Adolphus Wabara said the party’s journey is always rooted in a united and prosperous country.
He said millions of Nigerians believed that PDP remained the most credible platform for the country, and urged members, stakeholders, party leaders to embrace reconciliation, as “nothing should be allowed to override the collective interest of the people.”
On his part, Governor of Bauchi State, Bala Muhammed, said the party was suffering from the effect of coalition and defection, “but our members have stood strong, we are resolute. Those that left PDP will come back, this is not the first time, we have seen it before. As Governors of the PDP we have been united, staying together and keeping the party together.”
He promised that the PDP would work for the good of the people, insisting that no amount of intimidation from the federal government would deter them.
