Delta State has reaffirmed its dominance in Nigerian sports by emerging overall winner of the 22nd National Sports Festival, tagged Gateway Games 2024, held in Ogun State.
Delta once again cemented its status as Nigeria’s sporting powerhouse, emerging champions of the National Sports Festival for the fifth consecutive time.
The triumph was officially announced by Bukola Olopade, chairperson of the Main Organising Committee for the Gateway Games 2024, during Thursday’s closing ceremony in Abeokuta, Ogun State
The multi-sport event, which officially kicked off on May 18 and was declared open by President Bola Tinubu, saw Team Delta outclass other states with a commanding medal haul of 122 gold, 95 silver, and 105 bronze.
Bayelsa State secured second position on the medals table, while the host state, Ogun, finished third in the national fiesta that brought together thousands of athletes from across the federation.
Speaking after the victory, the Executive Chairman of the Delta State Sports Commission, Onoriode Oborevwori, attributed the triumph to what he described as “purposeful leadership” under Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and the state’s strategic investment in youth and sports development.
“This victory is for His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, whose unwavering commitment to youth empowerment and sports excellence through the MORE Agenda has brought us this far,” Oborevwori said.
Although a few medal events were yet to be concluded as of press time, Oborevwori stated that Delta’s insurmountable lead had already sealed its position at the top.
He praised the athletes, coaches, technical crew, and support staff for their discipline and relentless pursuit of excellence.
“This is not just about medals; it’s about building lives and inspiring hope. The MORE Agenda has opened doors for our youths to thrive through sports, and this win is proof of what is possible when leadership meets action,” he added.
Delta’s continued dominance at the National Sports Festival underscores its reputation as a breeding ground for elite athletes and reflects a sustained commitment to grassroots sports development.
Oborevwori also expressed appreciation to administrators, sports officers, and other stakeholders whose contributions helped secure the historic feat.
“As we look forward to receiving the championship trophy at the closing ceremony, we do so with pride, gratitude, and a renewed determination to keep building champions for Nigeria.”
Meanwhile, the mantle of hosting the next edition of the Games has been handed to Enugu State, which will stage the 23rd National Sports Festival in 2025.
