The Kano State Government has announced a compensation of ₦1 million to each of the families of 22 athletes who died in a tragic road accident while returning from the National Sports Festival in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
The Deputy Governor, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, disclosed this on Saturday during a condolence visit to the morgue at Nasarawa Hospital, where the bodies of most of the deceased athletes were deposited.
Gwarzo, who spoke on behalf of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, described the incident as a painful tragedy for both the state and the nation.
“This is a very sad day for Kano and the entire nation. These young athletes had just represented the state with pride at a national event, and some even won gold medals. Sadly, their lives were cut short just a few kilometers from home,” he said.
Gwarzo added that Governor Yusuf had directed immediate financial assistance to the bereaved families, along with the provision of food and other relief materials.
He noted that 20 of the victims had been identified at the hospital, while two others had already been taken home by their relatives.
The deputy governor also visited the Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital, where seven injured athletes are receiving treatment.
He assured that the state government would cover their medical expenses and ensure they get the best care available.
“The Governor has asked the state government to fully support the affected families and make sure the injured get the best treatment,” he said.
Gwarzo expressed the government’s commitment to standing by the families throughout their period of mourning and beyond.
“On behalf of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and the people of Kano State, we send our heartfelt condolences to the families of those who died. May Allah forgive their sins and grant them Jannatul Firdaus,” he added.
