Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has donated the sum of N1 million to each of the families of the 22 Kano State athletes and officials who lost their lives in a tragic road accident while returning from the recently-concluded National Sports Festival, tagged Gateway Games 2024, held in Abeokuta.

The donation was presented on Sunday by a high-powered delegation from Ogun State, led by the Deputy Governor, Engr. Noimot Salako-Oyedele, who visited Kano to commiserate with the bereaved families on behalf of Governor Abiodun.

Also on the delegation were the Secretary to the State Government, Tokunbo Talabi; Commissioner for Sports, Wasiu Isiaka; and the Executive Secretary of the Festival’s Local Organising Committee (LOC), Dr. Kweku Tandoh.

While speaking during the condolence visit, Salako-Oyedele described the gesture as a token of Governor Abiodun’s compassion and solidarity with the families of the deceased and the entire people of Kano State.

“The government and people of Ogun State are deeply saddened by this unfortunate incident. This gesture is a modest way of showing our support and identifying with the families in this difficult time,” the deputy governor said.

The delegation also lauded the efforts of emergency responders for their swift intervention during the accident and offered prayers for the recovery of those who sustained injuries.

Receiving the team on behalf of the Kano State Government, the Deputy Governor, Comrade Aminu Abdusalam Gwarzo, expressed deep appreciation for the donation and the solidarity shown by the Ogun State Government.

He also disclosed that Governor Abiodun had earlier called to personally condole with his Kano counterpart and the affected families.

The ill-fated accident occurred as the Kano State contingent was returning from the sports festival in Ogun. The crash claimed 22 lives and left several others injured.
