The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party are at loggerheads following a recent meeting between Governor Ademola Adeleke and President Bola Tinubu in Lagos.
Governor Adeleke had visited the President alongside his nephew and music star, David Adeleke (popularly known as Davido), and his elder brother, billionaire businessman, Dr. Deji Adeleke.
The visit sparked speculations of a possible defection of the governor to the APC.
Reacting, former Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Timothy Owoeye, dismissed the possibility, saying Adeleke would not be welcomed into the APC.
“I am saying this categorically that the APC ticket is not for sale. As of today, we don’t see Adeleke as a member or part of APC as a party,” Owoeye said, alleging that the Adeleke family is gripped by “fear of the unknown” and predicting the end of PDP’s tenure in 2026.
He insisted that the APC remains the dominant party in the state, blaming the 2022 and 2023 elections on alleged irregularities.
In response, the PDP described the APC’s position as “naive and arrogant.” The party’s state Publicity Secretary, Oladele Bamiji, argued that there was nothing unusual about the meeting between the President and the Governor, stating both are leaders with a duty to engage on national issues.
Bamiji accused the APC of trying to “financially strangulate” Osun State, adding that any failure in the state ultimately reflects on the federal government.
Meanwhile, Adeleke’s Chief Press Secretary, Olawale Rasheed, dismissed rumours of a defection, stressing that the governor remains a committed PDP member.
“The visit by the Adeleke dynasty to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is a routine courtesy visit. Any reading of defection agenda into the visit is mere fake news,” Rasheed said.
