A senior military officer identified as Lieutenant Commodore M. Buba has been stabbed to death by a suspected hoodlum in Kaduna State.
PLATFORM TIMES gathered that the incident occurred at the Kawo bridge area on Saturday evening when the officer was attacked while changing a flat tyre.
According to eyewitness accounts, the naval officer, who was on course at the Armed Forces Command and Staff College (AFCSC), Jaji, was returning to base when his vehicle developed a fault.
“He alighted from his car to change the tyre when a young man approached him and demanded his mobile phone,” a witness said. “When the officer resisted and questioned the motive, the attacker stabbed him in the chest with a locally-made knife.”
A member of a local vigilante group, Suleiman Dahiru, who attempted to intervene, was also stabbed on the hand by the assailant.
The hoodlum was eventually overpowered and lynched by an angry mob who arrived at the scene shortly after the incident.
PLATFORM TIMES further gathered that the officer was rushed to Manaal Hospital where he was confirmed dead on arrival. His body has since been deposited at the 44 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital mortuary in Kaduna.
A senior military official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, confirmed the attack and disclosed that security agencies had launched a covert operation to rid Kaduna metropolis of criminal elements.
“Troops in plain clothes, police personnel, and other security agents have been deployed to monitor and clear miscreants from bus stops and identified black spots across the city,” the officer said.
Confirming the development, the Kaduna State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Mansir Hassan, described the incident as “unfortunate” and assured residents that efforts were ongoing to strengthen security in the area and across the state.
He added, “The Command is committed to ensuring that those who threaten the peace of the state are identified and dealt with accordingly.”
The tragic killing has sparked concerns among residents over the rising insecurity in the state, particularly around strategic transport corridors like the Kawo bridge.
