Sowore Slams Showunmi Over Visit To Tinubu

A fresh political spat has erupted between the publisher of Sahara Reporters and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, and a former spokesperson of the Atiku Abubakar Presidential Campaign, Segun Showunmi, following the latter’s recent visit to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Sowore, in a scathing Facebook post on Sunday, accused Showunmi of duplicity and political inconsistency, describing him as a “double speaker” who once courted opposition unity against Tinubu, only to later pay homage to the same leader.

Titled “Segun Showunmi and Double Speak!”, Sowore’s post came hours after Showunmi shared pictures from a Sallah visit to President Tinubu in Lagos, which he described as “engaging and nostalgic.”

According to Sowore, Showunmi had contacted him after the 2023 presidential election, expressing deep frustration with the country’s trajectory under Tinubu and proposing a coalition of progressive forces to resist the regime.

“He reached out to me, expressing dissatisfaction with the nation’s path and proposing a unified front against the ruling elite, particularly Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s regime,” Sowore wrote.

Sowore also gave a personal account of their days at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), recalling how Showunmi was known for rousing student speeches but rarely took part in actual activism.

“He consistently avoided leadership responsibilities during student actions, always providing excuses,” Sowore alleged.

“I inquired whether he would maintain his resolve when facing off against the Tinubu regime as he had suggested; to date, he has not provided a response.”

Reacting sharply, Showunmi fired back in a lengthy rebuttal, questioning the integrity and direction of the coalition Sowore alluded to.

“My brother, can you in all honesty say that the gang of the blind should lead the one that sees? Have you not observed the joke they call a coalition?” he asked.

He maintained that his interaction with Tinubu was based on strategic national dialogue and mutual respect, not betrayal.

“Pray Yele, shall I not greet our brother/father just because he is president?” Showunmi queried. “Time spent with the president was deployed on very serious issues, I assure you.”

In his earlier post, Showunmi had shared photos from his Sallah Day 3 meeting with President Tinubu, stating, “I spent quality time with the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Nigeria… It was engaging and nostalgic.”
