— Ex-Labour Party Spokesperson Slams Former Presidential Candidate Over Party Crisis
Veteran Nollywood actor and former spokesperson for the Labour Party Presidential Campaign Council, Kenneth Okonkwo, has accused the party’s 2023 flagbearer, Peter Obi, of betrayal and political miscalculation.
Okonkwo, who recently resigned from the Labour Party amid a leadership crisis, said Obi’s failure to take decisive action against the factional leadership under Julius Abure amounted to “political suicide.”
Speaking during an interview with Symfoni TV, the actor-turned-politician described Obi as a “politician of convenience” who lacks the qualities of a team player and effective political leader.
“When we started in 2023, it was an organic movement. Every Nigerian wanted change. I wasn’t drafted; I joined voluntarily because I believed in the cause,” he said.
“But today, Obi is aligning himself with a faction allegedly hobnobbing with the APC. If you ask me, nobody is killing Peter Obi’s political career. Obi is committing political suicide, and I mean it.”
Okonkwo also accused the former Anambra State governor of ignoring repeated advice to distance himself from Abure’s camp, which he claims is eroding the party’s credibility and alienating core supporters.
“If you are a brilliant politician, after the elections you should focus on consolidating your base ahead of 2027. Instead, Obi is clinging to a faction that’s dragging the party down,” he said.
The former campaign spokesperson dismissed claims that he betrayed Obi by dumping the party, insisting that the betrayal came from Obi himself.
“Any politician who knows what he’s doing cannot be betrayed by anybody. If there is anyone who betrayed the other, I can say emphatically that Peter Obi betrayed me,” he said.
Okonkwo’s resignation came amid intensifying internal wrangling in the Labour Party, with many of its founding supporters expressing frustration over the party’s direction and perceived lack of internal democracy.
PLATFORM TIMES reports that the Labour Party has been embroiled in a prolonged leadership crisis since the 2023 general election, with allegations of financial mismanagement and collusion with rival parties further deepening the cracks within its ranks.
