Former Senate President, David Mark, has raised the alarm over the worsening security crisis in Benue State, warning that residents may soon be forced to defend themselves if the killings continue unchecked.
Mark, in a statement issued by his media aide, Paul Mumeh, described the persistent attacks on communities across the state as “senseless” and “tragic,” lamenting the government’s failure to protect lives and property.
He said the growing helplessness among residents, coupled with the unrelenting wave of violence, could push people to the brink where self-defense becomes the only viable option.
“This is the sad reality confronting our people. If nothing is done, they may be forced to take their safety into their own hands,” he said.
The former Senate President, who represented Benue South, warned that the situation had crossed tolerable limits, stressing that the primary responsibility of any government is the protection of its citizens.
“When the government fails in this duty, it betrays the trust of the people,” Mark added.
He called on the Federal Government to immediately intervene by deploying necessary security measures to stop the bloodshed and restore normalcy.
He also urged the Benue State Government to strengthen local security structures to reclaim peace across affected communities.
Mark appealed to traditional rulers, community leaders, and residents to work collaboratively with security agencies, urging vigilance and resilience in the face of adversity.
“This is not the time for silence. Communities must stand firm and support all genuine efforts to end this crisis,” he said.
While sympathizing with victims and their families, Mark called for calm, unity, and lawful conduct among residents.
“Our people have suffered enough. But even in pain, we must not resort to lawlessness. Let us show resilience, support one another, and resist fear,” he added.
