The House of Representatives has taken a decisive step toward extending the implementation timeline of the 2024 Appropriation Act, particularly its capital component, from the current deadline of June 30 to December 31, 2025.
This move followed the second reading of a bill on Tuesday, sponsored by the Deputy Majority Leader, Hon. Ibrahim Abdullahi Halims.
The bill, titled “A Bill for an Act to Amend the 2024 Appropriation Act to Further Extend the Capital Components of the Act From 30th June 2025 to 31st December 2025 and for Related Matters (HB. 2404),” seeks to provide more time for the execution of capital projects under the current budget.
The Speaker of the House, Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, emphasized the necessity of the extension, stating that the implementation of the 2024 budget had not been “substantially done.”
He explained that the delay in implementation made it imperative for the National Assembly to allow additional time to avoid abandonment of critical capital projects.
Following a unanimous voice vote, the bill sailed through second reading and was subsequently referred to the House Committee on Supply for further legislative action.
This development comes amid growing concerns about slow budget execution across ministries, departments, and agencies, many of which cite delayed releases of funds as a major hindrance.
If passed into law, the extension will offer the Federal Government a broader window to complete ongoing infrastructural and capital development projects, which are crucial to economic growth and service delivery across the country.
