After months of political turmoil that shook Rivers State to its core, a major truce has finally been brokered as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, announced on Friday that he is now ready to work with Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
Wike made the declaration shortly after a high-level reconciliation meeting convened by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where all warring factions in the state’s political feud, including the embattled governor and the State House of Assembly members, reached a peace agreement.
“We are members of the same political family,” Wike told journalists. “Yes, just like humans, you have disagreements, and then you also have time to settle them. That has finally been concluded today. For me, everything is over. There’s no more acrimony.”
The political crisis in Rivers, largely seen as a power tussle between Wike and his political protégé-turned-adversary, Governor Fubara, had escalated since late 2023.
The conflict extended into the State Assembly, prompting court battles, threats of impeachment, and deep division within the ruling Peoples Democratic Party in the state.
At the peak of the crisis in March 2025, President Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers following the collapse of governance structures.
He suspended Governor Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and all elected lawmakers, appointing retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas as interim administrator.
However, following Friday’s truce, it appears the Federal Government is set to reverse the emergency measures.
Governor Fubara, who also addressed journalists after the meeting, acknowledged the critical role played by President Tinubu in restoring calm.
“What we need for the progress of Rivers State is peace, and by the special grace of God, tonight—with the help of the president and the agreement with leaders of the state—peace has returned,” Fubara said. “We’ll do everything within our power to make sure that we sustain it this time around.”
Though the details of the peace pact remain undisclosed, political analysts say the reconciliation could mark the beginning of a new chapter for Rivers State if sustained.
The coming days will reveal whether the handshake between Wike and Fubara signifies genuine reconciliation or a temporary truce ahead of deeper political realignments.
