The 1971–1975 alumni set of Government Secondary School, Omu-Aran, Kwara State—fondly known as the Gateway Set—is set to mark its 50th anniversary on Friday, July 4, with a series of legacy projects and events celebrating five decades of enduring brotherhood, academic excellence, and community development.
In a statement issued in Ilorin, Chairman of the Central Planning Committee, Prof. Tajudeen Akanji, announced that the milestone celebration will be held in grand style with activities designed to honour the past, celebrate the present, and build for the future.
Prof. Akanji disclosed that the highlight of the golden jubilee will include the commissioning of key infrastructure and developmental projects donated by the alumni to the school.
The day will also feature a visit to His Royal Highness, the Olomu of Omu-Aran, as well as a symbolic communal walk to reaffirm the group’s bond with the community.
According to him, the Kwara State Government has expressed interest in partnering with the alumni group to upgrade the school’s facilities, a gesture that underscores the growing role of private citizens and alumni in revitalising public education in the state.
As part of the academic offerings for the day, a public lecture titled “National Development and the Imperative of Peace and Security” will be delivered by Comrade Isa Aremu, Director General of the Michael Imoudu National Institute for Labour Studies, Ilorin.
The school’s drama troupe is also billed to stage a thought-provoking play titled “Flight Ticket.”
Retired Major General Yemi Abidoye will chair the event, which is expected to draw top dignitaries, including representatives of the state government, royal fathers, and a host of distinguished old students who have excelled in various professions.
Prominent alumni expected at the event include Bishop Caleb Atolagbe; former MD of Harmony Securities, Alhaji Mufutaudeen Balogun; Dr. Dele Ige; Dr. Segun Dogunro; Dr. Depo Agboola; Engineers Kayode Adeoti, Dauda Awojobi, and Jacob Oyedepo; Navy Captain Yekini Mustafa; Chief Stephen Ayelabola; Mr. Tunji Oyinloye; Adegoke Olanrewaju; James Aina; Prof. Funsho Afolayan; and Prof. Olabode Bamgbola, among several others.
Prof. Akanji noted that the anniversary is not just a reunion but “a platform to give back, reflect on our journey, and collectively shape the future of education in our alma mater.”
The celebration promises to be a blend of nostalgia, civic engagement, and forward-looking conversations, as the Gateway Set returns to where it all began—united in purpose, and committed to legacy.
