In a dramatic political move ahead of the 2027 general elections, opposition figures across Nigeria’s political spectrum have united under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), unveiling former Senate President David Mark as interim national chairman of a new coalition aimed at halting what they described as Nigeria’s dangerous drift toward a one-party state.
The coalition, made up of members from the Labour Party (LP), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), All Progressives Congress (APC), and civil society groups, held its inaugural declaration at the Yar’Adua Centre, Abuja, on Wednesday — after a last-minute venue change from Wells Carlton Hotel, reportedly due to an “internal compliance matter.”
Mark, who now leads the revitalised ADC platform, delivered a searing critique of the current administration, accusing it of dismantling democratic institutions, stifling opposition, and dragging the nation toward “civilian dictatorship.”
“We have never seen a government so comfortable with corruption and so dismissive of accountability,” Mark said. “This coalition is not just about seizing power. It is about rebuilding the foundations of democracy that are crumbling before our eyes.”
He warned that Nigeria faces a “dangerous conspiracy” of total state capture, adding that the National Assembly has become a “mere appendage of presidential authority” and has allowed unconstitutional policies to go unchecked.
The former lawmaker said the new coalition represents a united front of political parties, youth organisations, civil society, and “patriots determined to rescue Nigeria from hunger, poverty, and insecurity.”
“The Nigerian people deserve a government that protects them and makes them feel safe in their own homes,” he declared.
Backing Mark’s emergence, outgoing ADC National Chairman Ralph Nwosu announced the collective resignation of his party’s executive members in support of the new leadership and vision.
“We are not just seeking power; we are offering a new direction,” Nwosu said. “The ADC has always been about the rejuvenation of Nigeria. We believe in the power of coalition and we have no doubt in the leadership of David Mark.”
Top political heavyweights in attendance included former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, former governors Rauf Aregbesola, Aminu Tambuwal, and Emeka Ihedioha, along with Rotimi Amaechi, Akeem Baba-Ahmed, Dele Momodu, Dino Melaye, Solomon Dalung, Eyinnaya Abaribe, and several ex-ministers and lawmakers across party lines.
Mark presented the ADC as more than a political party, describing it as a “fortress of revived democracy” rooted in the values of unity, transparency, inclusion, justice, and rule of law.
“This coalition’s mission transcends electoral ambition. It is a duty to anchor power once again in the will of the people,” he said.
