Security operatives have arrested three suspected masterminds behind the recent abduction of the Anambra State Commander of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Daniel Onyishi.
The suspects — identified as Emeka Ede, Okwudili Aja, and Onyebuchi Aja — were apprehended on June 26 during a joint operation by the Nigerian Military and the Department of State Services (DSS) in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Markus Kangye, disclosed this during a press briefing at the Defence Headquarters in Abuja on Thursday.
He said the raid, which targeted known hideouts of suspected kidnappers and members of the proscribed Eastern Security Network (ESN), led to the recovery of assorted weapons, a cache of ammunition, and illicit drugs.
Kangye said intelligence revealed that the arrested suspects played a key role in the June 12 kidnapping of Onyishi, who was intercepted by gunmen along Winner Road in Awka.
“The suspects are currently undergoing interrogation, and the items recovered are in the custody of the troops,” Kangye stated.
In a related development, troops acting on credible intelligence arrested two individuals linked to the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and ESN at a Point of Sale (POS) outlet in Ihiala LGA on June 26.
Items recovered from the suspects included eight mobile phones, a transaction booklet, and a total of ₦1,561,400.
Major General Kangye further clarified that the military has no mandate to grant amnesty to terrorists or bandits, amid public concerns following reports of surrendered insurgents in Katsina State.
“Amnesty is not within our jurisdiction. We operate under clear rules of engagement and hand over suspects to relevant authorities. It is other arms of government that determine amnesty,” he explained.
