Emir Of Kano Crisis Deepens As Ado Bayero’s Loyalists Evicted From Main Palace

…Roofs destroyed, families forced out amid escalating tension

The lingering Kano emirate crisis took a dramatic turn on Monday as loyalists of the deposed Emir Aminu Ado Bayero were forcibly evicted from the main palace, escalating tensions in the historic northern city.

PLATFORM TIMES gathered that several officials and their families, who have resided within the palace premises for decades, were ordered to vacate the premises for alleged disloyalty to the reinstated Emir, Muhammadu Sanusi II.

Some insiders alleged that suspected thugs carried out the eviction violently, tearing off the roofs of some houses within the palace to force the occupants out. The action reportedly sparked chaos Monday evening as affected families resisted the forceful removal.

Among those affected by the eviction order are prominent traditional officials including Galadiman Sallama, Sani Kwano; Dan-Habu Maji-Dadi; Sule Makama; Sarkin-Yakin Dan-Rimi; Sarkin Lema; Sarkin Tafarki; Baba Ta’aji; Oji Driver; Odiye Driver; and Bale na Sarkin Bichi.

The eviction comes amid an ongoing legal battle over the Kano throne. Ado Bayero, who was sacked by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf in May 2024, continues to challenge his removal in court and has remained at a mini palace within the emirate. Meanwhile, Sanusi, who was reinstated as Emir of Kano by Governor Yusuf, has since resumed duties at the main palace.

Since the controversial reinstatement of Sanusi—who was dethroned in 2020 by former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje—the emirate has remained deeply divided, with both Sanusi and Ado Bayero operating rival courts from separate palaces.

The unfolding development has placed many traditional title holders, district heads, and council members in a precarious position as uncertainty looms over where their loyalty should lie.
