A 200-level student of Babcock University, Olaoluwa Subomi Lawson, has died by suicide at his father’s residence inside the Redeemed Christian Church of God’s Redemption Camp, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State.
PLATFORM TIMES gathered that the 19-year-old student was found hanged in his room, with family sources saying he took his life under yet-to-be-determined circumstances.
The tragic incident was confirmed to security operatives by a relative of the deceased who resides in Festac Town, Lagos.
According to sources close to the family, Olaoluwa’s mother, Mrs. Olufunke Lawson, who lives in the United Kingdom, reportedly alerted the family to the tragedy after receiving a distressing message concerning her son’s well-being.
The deceased, who was pursuing his undergraduate studies at Babcock University, Ilishan-Remo, Ogun State, was said to have been on break and staying at the Redemption Camp when the incident occurred.
Another version of the story stated that the deceased was caught and suspended for engaging in examination malpractice.
As of press time, no suicide note was found, and the reason behind his action remains unclear.
PLATFORM TIMES gathered that the police have since launched an investigation into the incident to uncover the full circumstances surrounding his death.
A senior security source, who confirmed the report under anonymity, described the situation as “deeply painful,” stating that all necessary steps are being taken to ensure a thorough investigation.
Olaoluwa’s death has sparked grief across his academic and religious communities, with many expressing shock at the news.
Friends and fellow students took to social media to mourn his passing and call for increased mental health support for young people.
Babcock University is yet to release an official statement as of the time of filing this report.
Mental health experts have urged families, schools, and religious institutions to be more proactive in identifying signs of emotional distress in young people and to provide timely interventions.
