Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, once again stirred public conversation after a video surfaced showing him serving food at a community gathering in Umuchima, Imo State.
In the widely circulated clip, Obi was seen carrying trays and personally dishing out food to guests, drawing applause from attendees and social media users who hailed his simplicity and humility.
Dressed modestly and arriving without the usual fanfare, Obi mingled freely with community members and local leaders present at the event.
The scene, which many described as a rare display of humility among Nigerian political elites, reignited discussions around Obi’s populist style and leadership philosophy.
Supporters and admirers applauded the gesture as a symbol of servant leadership and a reflection of the values he consistently espouses.
“This is the kind of leader Nigeria needs – one who is accessible and not obsessed with power or status,” said Chika Onyeka, a local resident who attended the event.
However, critics have accused the former governor of engaging in political showmanship ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“This is pure optics,” said political analyst, Dr. Bamidele Ojo. “He understands the power of symbolism in Nigerian politics and is clearly positioning himself early.”
Since the 2023 election, where Obi emerged third in the presidential race but built a strong following among Nigerian youths and urban voters, his public appearances have consistently drawn attention.
Many view him as a frontrunner for the 2027 polls, despite internal wrangling within the Labour Party.
Whether sincere or strategic, Obi’s latest public outing has once again placed him at the center of national discourse—highlighting the power of perception in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
Videos from the event have continued to trend online, further fuelling both admiration and controversy over his approach to grassroots engagement.
