Tragedy struck in Oju Local Government Area of Benue State on Thursday as a Junior Secondary School 3 student reportedly beat his teacher to death during a confrontation over a confiscated school cap.

The suspect, identified as 16-year-old Friday Ogamude, a student of UBE Oju Centre, allegedly attacked his teacher, Mr. Oyibe Oyibe, aged 35, during an argument that turned violent. Sources said the confrontation was sparked by a cap the teacher had seized from the student since May 2025.

Security analyst, Zagazola Makama, who confirmed the incident, noted that the altercation escalated rapidly, with the student allegedly striking the teacher in a fit of rage. Mr. Oyibe reportedly collapsed on the spot.

He was immediately rushed to Amara Hospital in Oju, where doctors confirmed him dead. His remains have since been deposited at the General Hospital mortuary in Oju for autopsy.

Spokesperson for the Benue State Police Command confirmed the arrest of the suspect and condemned the attack in strong terms.

The command assured the public that a thorough investigation has commenced and that justice will be pursued to its logical conclusion.

“The act is unfortunate and highly condemnable. The suspect is currently in custody and will be charged to court after the conclusion of investigation,” the statement read.

The incident has sparked outrage across the community, with education stakeholders calling for a review of school discipline protocols and enhanced security for teachers.

Mr. Oyibe’s death adds to the growing concerns over violence against educators in Nigeria’s school system.
