Former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away in London on Sunday, July 13, 2025, will be laid to rest on Monday, July 14, at his private residence in Daura, Katsina State, according to Islamic rites.

This was disclosed by his former spokesperson, Garba Shehu, in an official statement released late Sunday night.

Shehu said the burial will be conducted in line with Islamic traditions, with close family members, dignitaries, and religious leaders expected to attend.

The late President reportedly died at about 4:30 p.m. in the United Kingdom following a brief illness.

Buhari, a retired Major General and former military Head of State, served as Nigeria’s democratically elected President from May 29, 2015, to May 29, 2023.

His death comes two years after leaving office and has been met with an outpouring of grief and condolences from across the country and beyond.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in his tribute, described Buhari as a patriot who dedicated his life to the service of Nigeria.

Several governors, political leaders, and traditional rulers have also issued statements mourning the loss.

Preparations are already underway in Daura for the burial, with security tightened and logistics in place to accommodate the anticipated crowd of sympathisers and mourners.

Buhari’s passing marks the end of an era in Nigerian political history, with analysts already reflecting on his legacy, achievements, and controversies during his eight-year civilian administration.

The Federal Government is yet to announce any plans for a national day of mourning or a state burial ceremony, though tributes have continued to pour in from world leaders and institutions.
