The League of Imams and Alfas in Ogun State has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of the Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, Oba (Dr.) Sikiru Kayode Adetona, CFR, describing his demise as a monumental loss to the Muslim community and the nation at large.

In a condolence message signed by its Secretary General, Alhaji Tajudeen Mustapha Adewunmi, and made available to PLATFORM TIMES, the League said the late monarch, who served as the Amir (spiritual head) of all Muslim traditional rulers in Yorubaland, left behind a legacy of unity, peace, and religious harmony.

“The League of Imams and Alfas, Ogun State, received with deep sorrow and a profound sense of loss the news of the passing of His Royal Majesty, Oba (Dr.) Sikiru Kayode Adetona. This is indeed an irreparable loss, not only to Ijebuland but to the entire Ogun State and Nigeria,” the statement read.

Describing the late monarch as an exemplary leader and statesman, the League noted that Oba Adetona’s over six-decade reign was marked by forthright leadership and a commitment to justice, religious tolerance, and the development of his people.

“As the overall head of Muslim traditional rulers in Yorubaland (Amirul Muluk), the Awujale played a unifying role among the Muslim Ummah in the region. His fatherly counsel, unwavering support for interfaith harmony, and relentless promotion of Islamic values were legendary,” the statement added.

The League extended condolences to the Awujale’s family, the Grand Chief Imam of Ijebuland, the Muslim community in Ogun State, and the entire Ijebu people.

It also commiserated with the Governor of Ogun State, Prince Dapo Abiodun, whom the late monarch supported as a father figure and royal ally in advancing the state’s progress.

The statement further acknowledged President Bola Tinubu, describing the monarch as a national elder whose voice of moderation helped shape Nigeria’s development.

“We pray that Almighty Allah forgives his shortcomings, accepts his good deeds, and grants him Al-Jannah Firdaus. May Allah strengthen the Royal Family, the Ijebu Traditional Council, the Ogun State Muslim Council, and the people of Ijebuland to bear this loss.”

The League also directed all Chief Imams in the state to observe a special prayer for the late monarch during the Friday Juma’at service on July 17, 2025.

“As we mourn this royal icon, we urge all Muslims and residents of Ogun State to remain united in upholding the values of peace, service, and harmony that the Awujale so fervently championed.”

Oba Sikiru Adetona, who reigned for over 64 years, passed away at the age of 91.
