The Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria (BON) has joined other prominent voices across the country in mourning the demise of the Awujale and paramount ruler of Ijebuland, Oba (Dr) Sikiru Kayode Adetona, CFR, describing his transition as “the passing of a sovereign.”

In a condolence message signed by its Executive Secretary, Dr. Yemisi Bamgbose, and issued on Monday, BON said Oba Adetona’s death signalled the end of a glorious era, given his long, impactful reign that began before Nigeria’s independence in 1960.

“The ancestral transition of the revered monarch of Ijebuland, His Royal Majesty Oba (Dr) Kayode Adetona, Ogbagba II, the Awujale of Ijebuland, could be described as the passing of a sovereign,” BON said. “He was the last monarch whose reign preceded Nigeria’s independence.”

BON hailed the late monarch as the doyen of traditional rulers in Nigeria, a respected father figure in Ijebuland, and a custodian of Yoruba heritage, fondly revered as Orisa Ijebu by his people.

“His influence transcended his immediate domain. He was Yoruba culture personified and the pride of the race,” the statement added.

The organisation expressed its solidarity with the people of Ijebuland, Ogun State, and Nigerians in the diaspora during this period of grief, noting that Oba Adetona’s legacy would remain indelible in history.

“We pray that the Almighty God will grant him eternal rest,” it concluded.

Oba Adetona, one of Nigeria’s longest-reigning monarchs, ascended the throne in 1960 and ruled for over six decades, becoming a symbol of stability, integrity, and royal wisdom.
