Ogun NIPR Marks World PR Day, Urges Fight Against Misinformation

The Ogun State Chapter of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) has joined the global communications community in celebrating World PR Day 2025, with a renewed call for public relations professionals to play a leading role in bridging societal divides and combating misinformation in today’s fast-changing media landscape.

In a statement commemorating the annual event held every July 16, the chapter’s Chairman, Mrs. Oluwaseun Boye, underscored the importance of inclusive communication in navigating the growing polarisation in society, especially amid the rise of artificial intelligence, deepfakes, and information disorder.

“This year’s theme, ‘Building Bridges and Navigating Polarisation,’ is a timely reminder of the urgent responsibility PR professionals have in today’s fragmented world,” Boye said.

“In a digital age where information travels faster than ever, and the risk of reputational damage is high, maintaining authenticity and trust has become crucial.”

She noted that emerging technologies, while offering new opportunities, have also intensified the challenges facing communicators, making it imperative for PR practitioners to stay ahead of trends and remain strategic in their engagement.

“PR professionals must be proactive in crisis communication, remain grounded in ethics, and build messages that resonate with diverse audiences. We are not just image-makers; we are nation-builders,” she added.

Boye challenged communication experts to harness their skills and creativity to support Nigeria’s development goals, from attracting foreign investment to fostering national unity and strengthening democratic governance.

“As strategic communicators, you have the power to promote economic growth, social cohesion, and political development by encouraging dialogue, understanding, and empathy among various interest groups,” she said.

The chapter also reaffirmed its commitment to promoting best practices in public relations through stakeholder engagement and institutional collaboration.

Boye said Ogun NIPR would deepen partnerships with government agencies, private organisations, academic institutions, civil society groups, and the media to enhance the visibility and value of public relations in the state.

Secretary of the chapter, Kunle Olayeni, ANIPR, also signed the statement, emphasising the importance of upholding ethical standards in the profession.

World PR Day, launched in 2020, is celebrated globally to recognise the influence of public relations in shaping narratives, supporting governance, and building cohesive societies.

It brings together PR professionals, students, organisations, and thought leaders to reflect on their roles and reaffirm their dedication to ethical communication.
