Former Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, has declared that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is on a steep decline and is unlikely to fare well in the 2027 general elections, predicting the party may come fourth in the national race.
Fayose, a longtime PDP stalwart and outspoken critic of internal party failings, made the assertion during a live appearance on Politics Today, a political affairs programme on Channels Television, aired Friday evening.
According to him, the PDP’s descent into irrelevance is largely due to unresolved internal wranglings, marginalisation of experienced leaders, and a failure to learn from past electoral defeats.
> “If the party continues on this path of disunity and exclusion of key stakeholders, it will not only lose its place as the main opposition but may end up in fourth position in 2027,” Fayose warned.
The former governor, who has frequently clashed with the party’s national leadership, described the PDP’s current trajectory as politically suicidal and called for an urgent overhaul of its structure and approach ahead of the next elections.
He said the party leadership had failed to manage its diversity, alienated influential power blocs, and allowed ego battles to weaken its electoral fortunes.
Fayose’s remarks come amid growing concerns among PDP members and supporters over the party’s waning influence, following its poor performance in the 2023 general elections where it lost several key states and failed to regain power at the federal level.
