A Kano State High Court has sentenced two men, Buhari Abdullahi and Umar Mukhtar Usman, to six months imprisonment for impersonating officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in a bid to defraud unsuspecting members of the public.
The duo were convicted on Friday, July 25, 2025, by Justice Nasiru Saminu, after pleading guilty to a one-count charge of false impersonation brought against them by the Kano Zonal Command of the EFCC.
According to a statement released by the anti-graft agency, the men were arrested after they were found parading themselves as EFCC operatives using fake identity cards.
Their actions, the Commission stated, were intended to extort money from residents of Kano under the guise of investigating financial crimes.
The charge against them read: “That you, Buhari Abdullahi and Umar Mukhtar Usman, sometime in May 2025 at Kano, within the jurisdiction of this honourable court, falsely impersonated investigators of the EFCC, used false identity cards, and paraded yourselves as staff of the Commission.
“You thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 132 of the Penal Code Law.”
Following their guilty plea, the prosecuting counsel, Idris Haruna, urged the court to convict them accordingly.
Justice Saminu thereafter sentenced both men to six months in prison, with an option of ₦50,000 fine each.
The EFCC has repeatedly warned members of the public to be wary of impostors posing as officials of the Commission and to always demand proper identification from anyone claiming to represent the agency.
