The Kaduna State Police Command has arrested a young man suspected of impersonating several Northern Nigerian governors in a sophisticated fraud scheme that allegedly targeted prominent Nigerians.
The suspect, whose identity is being withheld by the police, was said to have duped several unsuspecting individuals by impersonating top government officials, including some sitting governors in the North.
Spokesman of the Kaduna Police Command, ASP Mansur Hassan, confirmed the arrest in an interview with BBC Hausa.
According to him, the suspect was nabbed after a trail of fraudulent activities linked to his impersonation acts caught the attention of security operatives.
“He is a master impersonator. He mimics voices with such precision that even aides and associates of the governors could hardly tell the difference,” ASP Hassan revealed.
The suspect was also found with a large database of contacts, including names and numbers of several influential Nigerians, raising concerns about the scale and sophistication of his operation.
“The man is an expert at mimicking voices. Once he hears someone speak, he can replicate their voice almost perfectly. This made it easy for him to deceive his victims,” Hassan added.
The police say investigations are ongoing to determine the full extent of the fraud and identify victims who may have fallen prey to the scheme. The identities of the impersonated governors were also not disclosed due to the sensitive nature of the case.
The arrest has raised fresh concerns about the vulnerability of public figures to voice impersonation scams and the ease with which fraudsters exploit technology and social engineering to commit crimes.
The Kaduna Command assured the public that justice would be served and urged citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious communication claiming to be from public officials.
Further updates are expected as the investigation continues.
